Orthodox Church to observe ‘protest day’

NCW suggestion on confession

The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church will observe August 5 as ‘day of protest’ against a recommendation of the National Commission for Women (NCW) to ban the sacrament of confession in churches.

The commission made the suggestion recently following a sex scandal involving four priests of the Orthodox Church, who allegedly misused the secret confession by a laywoman to blackmail and sexually exploit her.

In a statement on Saturday, Church authorities said confession was one of the important sacraments of t

he Church and the government should reject the recommendation. The recommendation was immature and taken without proper study, discussion or analysis.

A resolution demanding the rejection of the suggestion would be adopted by believers during the Sunday mass on August 5, the press note said.

The resolution said the recommendation was a blemish on the rich Indian culture which had always viewed the values of the Christian faith with respect and tolerance.
