ലോകപ്രശസ്ത വേദശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനും, ദാര്‍ശനികനും, ചിന്തകനും, ഗ്രന്ഥകാരനും. 1922 ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 9-ന് തൃപ്പൂണിത്തുറയില്‍ ജനിച്ചു. പിതാവ്: പൈലി, മാതാവ്: ഏലി. 1937-ല്‍ മെട്രിക്കുലേഷന്‍ പരീക്ഷ പാസ്സായി. അതുകഴിഞ്ഞ് പത്രലേഖകന്‍ (1937-’42), ട്രാന്‍സ്പോര്‍ട്ട് കമ്പനിയില്‍ ഗുമസ്തന്‍, പി. ആന്‍ഡ് ടി. വകുപ്പില്‍ ഗുമസ്തനും പോസ്റ്റ്മാസ്റ്ററും (1942-’47). അക്കാലത്ത് പി. ആന്‍ഡ് ടി. യൂണിയന്‍ തിരുവിതാംകൂര്‍ – കൊച്ചി അസ്സോസിയേറ്റ് സെക്രട്ടറി. പിന്നീട് എത്യോപ്യയില്‍ സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ സ്കൂളുകളില്‍ അദ്ധ്യാപകന്‍ (1947-’50). അമേരിക്കന്‍ സര്‍വ്വകലാശാലകളില്‍ പഠിച്ച് ഉന്നതബിരുദങ്ങള്‍ നേടി (1950-’54). ആലുവാ ഫെലോഷിപ്പ് ഹൗസ് ബര്‍സാര്‍ ആയി പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചു (1954-’56). എത്യോപ്യന്‍ ചക്രവര്‍ത്തി ഹെയ്ലി സെലാസിയുടെ പേഴ്സണല്‍ അസിസ്റ്റന്‍റും ഉപദേശകനും (1956-’59). 1959 ജനുവരിയില്‍ ശെമ്മാശനായി. യേല്‍ സര്‍വ്വകലാശാലയിലും ഓക്സ്ഫഡിലും ഉപരിപഠനം നടത്തി (1959-’61). 1961-ല്‍ വൈദികനായി. ക്രൈസ്തവസഭകളുടെ അഖിലലോക കൗണ്‍സിലിന്‍റെ (ണ.ഇ.ഇ.) അസോസിയേറ്റ് ജനറല്‍ സെക്രട്ടറിയായി പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചു (1962-’67). സോവിയറ്റ് യൂണിയനിലേക്കു പോയ ണ.ഇ.ഇ.യുടെ ഡെലിഗേഷന്‍റെയും (1962), യുനെസ്കോ ഡെലിഗേഷന്‍റെയും (1967) നേതാവ്. 1967 മുതല്‍ 1996 വരെ ഓര്‍ത്തഡോക്സ് സെമിനാരിയുടെ പ്രിന്‍സിപ്പല്‍. 1975-ല്‍ മെത്രാപ്പോലീത്തായായി. 1976 മുതല്‍ 1996 വരെ ഡല്‍ഹി ഭദ്രാസന മെത്രാപ്പോലീത്താ. ക്രൈസ്തവസഭകളുടെ ലോകകൗണ്‍സില്‍ (WCC) പ്രസിഡന്‍റുമാരിലൊരാളായി പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചു (1983-’91).
ലോകസമാധാനത്തിന്‍റെയും സൗഹൃദത്തിന്‍റെയും സന്ദേശവുമായി ആഗോളതലത്തില്‍ സഞ്ചരിച്ചു. ഒട്ടധികം അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര സംഘടനകളുടെ നേതൃത്വം വഹിച്ചിരുന്നു. സോവിയറ്റ് ലാന്‍ഡ് നെഹ്റു അവാര്‍ഡ്, ഓട്ടോ നുഷ്കെ പ്രൈസ് ഫോര്‍ ദി പീസ് (ജര്‍മ്മനി) തുടങ്ങി ഇരുപതോളം രാജ്യാന്തര അവാര്‍ഡുകളും ഒട്ടേറെ ബഹുമതികളും ലഭിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഗ്രിഗറി ഓഫ് നിസ്സായെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ഗവേഷണപഠനത്തിന് 1975-ല്‍ സെറാമ്പൂര്‍ യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റിയില്‍ നിന്ന് ഡോക്ടറേറ്റ്. കൂടാതെ റഷ്യയിലെ ലെനിന്‍ഗ്രാഡ് തിയോളജിക്കല്‍ അക്കാഡമി, ഹംഗറിയിലെ ബുഡാപ്പസ്റ്റ് ലൂതറന്‍ തിയോളജിക്കല്‍ അക്കാഡമി, ചെക്കോസ്ലോവാക്യയിലെ ജാന്‍ഹസ് ഫാക്കല്‍റ്റി എന്നിവിടങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്ന് ഓണററി ഡോക്ടറേറ്റ്.
ജോയ് ഓഫ് ഫ്രീഡം, ഫ്രീഡം ഓഫ് മാന്‍, കോസ്മിക്മാന്‍, ഹ്യൂമന്‍ പ്രസന്‍സ്, എന്‍ലൈറ്റന്‍മെന്‍റ് ഈസ്റ്റ് ആന്‍റ് വെസ്റ്റ്, സയന്‍സ് ഫോര്‍ സെയിന്‍ സൊസൈറ്റീസ്, എ ലൈറ്റ് റ്റൂ ബ്രൈറ്റ്, എ ഹ്യൂമന്‍ ഗോഡ് തുടങ്ങി 57 ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങള്‍ രചിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. പുസ്തകരൂപത്തില്‍ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കപ്പെടാത്ത മലയാളം, ഇംഗ്ലീഷ്, ജര്‍മ്മന്‍, ഫ്രഞ്ച് എന്നീ ഭാഷകളിലുള്ള പ്രബന്ധങ്ങള്‍ നൂറുകണക്കിനുണ്ട്. 1996 നവംബര്‍ 24-നു കാലംചെയ്തു. ഓര്‍ത്തഡോക്സ് സെമിനാരിചാപ്പലില്‍ അന്ത്യവിശ്രമംകൊള്ളുന്നു.
Dr. Paulos Mar Gregorios (1922-1996)
Reputed scholar, theologian, philosopher and polyglot, Dr Paulos Mar Gregorios (formerly Paul Verghese) sought to bring together in a holistic vision insights from several disciplines like philosophy, economics, political science, medicine, education, ecology, physics and theology.
Born in 1922 at Tripunithura, Kerala, the great scholar-bishop had his earlier stints in his home state as a journalist and postal service employee. He went to Ethiopia in 1947 accepting the job of a teacher there and, in course of time became the Special Secretary to Emperor Haile Selassie. He had an exceptional educational career in universities of Yale, Princeton and Oxford. Returning to Kerala, he was ordained priest in the Orthodox Church. Fr. Paul Verghese became the Associate General Secretary of the World Council of Churches, Geneva in 1962 and Principal of the Orthodox Theological Seminary in 1967. In 1975, he was elevated as a bishop. Metropolitan Paulos Mar Gregorios took charge of the Delhi Diocese of the Orthodox Church in July 1975. Known to academic circles at JNU and Delhi University his vision of a new humanity rooted in justice and peace continues to inspire many across the world.
Honours came unsought to Mar Gregorios. He served as a President of the World Council of Churches and of the Indian Philosophical Congress. In 1988, he received the Soviet Land Nehru Award. Mar Gregorios travelled widely and showed an unusual intellectual courage to explore new paradigms in human thinking. Visiting professor in various universities, he initiated several inter-cultural and inter-faith dialogues.
In honour of his multi disciplinary work and scholarly contributions to the academic world, the Mahatma Gandhi University instituted a Chair in his name.
Mar Gregorios has authored more than 50 books. The Joy of Freedom, Freedom of Man, The Cosmic Man, The Human Presence, Enlightenment East and West, A Light Too Bright and his spiritual autobiography Love’s Freedom: The Grand Mystery are some of the most remarkable among them.
