A  Tribute to M. A. Joseph / Fr. Jaise K. George

“Good teachers impart good education. Great teachers groom their students to become leaders. Ordinary teachers direct us along the right path, but great teachers inspire us to seek our own path. They encourage us to discover our talents.”

These words are true when I remember Joy sir ( M. A. Jospeh, Mavumkal). He encouraged me in public speaking and accompanied me to many places to participate in the elocution competitions. I do remember with gratitude that it’s his painstaking efforts and relentless encouragement which made me confident enough to stand before the audience.

My first speech was not at all perfect, in fact I could not complete the first sentence; the futile effort of a four year old boy! Today when I deliver public speeches confidently I remember him. I could participate and won many accolades in Inter-Collegiate/ University levels just because of his endeavours at our Valuvely St. Peter’s Sunday School.

Later when I started studying Psychology I understood he was giving me unconditional positive regard. When I used to prepare for competitions everytime he used to remind me that we participate not to get prize but what is more important is to perform well.

As he was my Sunday School Headmaster I place him before my Theology professors. He taught me the basics of Orthodox Spirituality. He was eloquent while describing the rich heritage of our liturgy and lineage of St. Thomas. I learnt foundations of Church History and Theology from him.

He is a retired school teacher. I admire him as a great teacher. I was really amazed by his deep knowledge and thorough understanding regarding certain things. He never pretended to be a scholar. He had a large collection of books.

Also I have seen many qualities while serving the Church. He did nothing for his name. He had no claims for the services he rendered. He was never behind fame and position. He was always there when it was required. He has always given opportunities to others.

He passed away this afternoon. He was 83 years old. He is the brother of Late Rev. Fr. M. A. Thomas Mavumkal . He was a loving, and helpful man who will be remembered for his warm smile, and gentle spirit. He served Pathicadu St. Peter’s & St. Paul’s Orthodox Church in various capacities like Sunday School Headmaster and member of Managing Commitee.
He is survived by his wife Mrs. Aleyamma Joseph (Rtd. Teacher) and sons Andrews Joseph (U.K.), Thomas Joseph (Saudi) & daughters Betty Binny, Birly; and grandchildren. Please keep the departed soul and the grieving family members in your thoughts and prayers.

The funeral will be held at Pathicadu St. Peter’s & St. Paul’s Orthodox Church on Tuesday, April 03, 2018.

With faith in Christ and in the hope of resurrection, I pay my tribute to my great Guru and mentor.

May the memory of the departed be eternal!
