Orthodox Church to observe ‘protest day’

NCW suggestion on confession

The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church will observe August 5 as ‘day of protest’ against a recommendation of the National Commission for Women (NCW) to ban the sacrament of confession in churches.

The commission made the suggestion recently following a sex scandal involving four priests of the Orthodox Church, who allegedly misused the secret confession by a laywoman to blackmail and sexually exploit her.

In a statement on Saturday, Church authorities said confession was one of the important sacraments of the Church and the government should reject the recommendation. The recommendation was immature and taken without proper study, discussion or analysis.

A resolution demanding the rejection of the suggestion would be adopted by believers during the Sunday mass on August 5, the press note said.

The resolution said the recommendation was a blemish on the rich Indian culture which had always viewed the values of the Christian faith with respect and tolerance.
