Catholicos sees bid to sabotage SC verdict

The Catholicos of the East, Moran Mar Baselius Marthoma Mathews II, supreme head of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, has called upon the authorities to expedite legal action against those who were responsible for the series of attacks against places of worship and other institutions belonging to the Church.
Addressing a press conference at the Cathholicate Palace here today, the Catholicos said the attack on the official residence of Dr. Thomas Mar Athanasius Metropolitan at Muvattupuzha and the propaganda being spread by interested parties, had created a serious situation. It was no more possible to remain as a silent spectator if the attack against Church properties continued, he said.
According to him, he was committed to the Supreme Court judgment in the Church case and would continue to take steps to implement it. However, there was a concerted move to sabotage the judgment by creating a law and order issue, he alleged. He pointed out that the judgment had made it clear that the Catholicos had total authority over the Church properties. The attempt was to upset the implementation of the Supreme Court verdict in this regard.
The Catholicos said the benefit of status quo as on May 20, 1995 was applicable only to those who had signed their allegiance to the Church Constitution of 1934. Accordingly, the Metropolitans of Kandanad, Anganaly and Thrissur had signed their allegiance and many others had expressed their support. Dr. Thomas Mar Athanasius was functioning after signing his allegiance to the Constitution. The Catholicos suspected that the incidents at Muvattupuzha were the result of the attempt to capture the official residence of the Metropolitan.
Reacting to a question, the Catholicos said he was sure whether the Antiochen Patriarch was supportive of these actions. “However, I am equally unsure whether these people would be bold enough to act the way they are doing, without his support”, the Catholicos said.
He said the ordination of Mar Kuriakose Julius by the Patriarch the other day at Damascus was illegal under the Constitution of 1934, as the Catholicos was not consulted in this regard.
He alleged that the attack at Muvattupuzha was the latest in a series of such attacks and was aimed at the closing down of churches. The Catholicos called upon his followers not to get agitated over such incidents and to work earnestly for the implementation of the Supreme Court verdict.

Catholicos wants strict action against ‘ex-Patriarch’ faction
Kottaayam Sept 28, 1998: Catholicos Baselius Marthoma Mathews II, who is also the Malanakara Metropolitan, has called on the Government to take stringent measures against the attempts by the “ex-Patriarch” faction to take over places of worship and related institutions.
Addressing mediapersons at the Catholicate Palace at Devalokam today, the Catholicos warned that attacks and take overs would not be tolerated any more.
The attack on the official residence of Dr. Thomas Mar Athanasius Metropolitan at Muvattupuzha on September 19 midnight has created a most serious situation. After unleashing the attack, the interested parties were propagating gossips and untruths.
The Catholicos denied the allegation made by the “ex-Patriarch” faction that he was about to take over the Muvattupuzha aramana.
After the Supreme Court verdict of May 20, 1995 and the subsequent apex court orders dated March 25, 1996 and February 5, 1997, there was only one Church and not two groups. The Catholicos can enter any church and related institutions as per the Supreme Court verdict. Still he had not visited any of the disputed places in view of his desire to maintain peace and tranquility in the Church, the Catholicos said. The allegation that he was about to enter the Muvaattupuzha aramana was fraudulent propaganda, he explained.
The Catholicos termed the ordination of Kuriakose Mar Julios Metropolitan by the Patriarch in Damascus as illegal.
The ordination was led by the Patriarch in Damascus yesterday. The Patriarch can ordain a bishop for the Malankara Church only in consultation with the Catholicos, as per the Supreme Court verdict which upheld the constitution of the Church passed in 1934.
Referring to the attack on Dr. Thomas Mar Athanasius Metropolitan and the Muvattupuzha aramaana, the Catholicos asked, “Is it at midnight that a copy of the court order was being allegedly served at the aramana by some priests and others escorted by assailants carrying lethal weapons?”
He said the attacks were intended to block the execution of the Supreme Court verdict. Only those Metropolitans who declare allegiance to the 1934 constitution can have the benefit of status quo as on May 20, 1995, as per the Supreme Court verdict. The status quo was not for continuance of groups.
Consequently, the Metropolitans of Kandanad, Angamaly and Thrissur had declared their allegiance to the constitution. Many other Metropolitans had favoured this step. It was in accordance with the Supreme Court verdict that Dr. Thomas Mar Athanasius Metropolitan has been functioning in association with Kandanad Metropolitan Mathews Mar Severios after declaring the allegiance. The midnight onslaught was an attempt to take over his official residence at Muvattupuzha, it is to be suspected, the Catholicos said.
The attacks were one in a series by interested parties at Kolenchery, Kattachira, Allapra etc. to ensure closure of these churches. The Catholicos urged the faithful to remain calm even in the face of provocations.

കോട്ടയം: അക്രമമാര്ഗ്ഗത്തിലൂടെ ആരാധനാലയങ്ങളും അനുബന്ധ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളും കൈയേറാന് നടക്കുന്ന ശ്രമങ്ങള്ക്കെതിരെ സര്ക്കാര് കര്ശന നടപടി സ്വീകരിക്കണമെന്ന് മലങ്കര ഓര്ത്തഡോക്സ് സഭാദ്ധ്യക്ഷന് ബസേലിയോസ് മാര്ത്തോമ്മാ മാത്യൂസ് ദ്വിതീയന് കാതോലിക്കാ ബാവാ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു. നിയമവ്യവസ്ഥയെ വെല്ലുവിളിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് സഭയ്ക്കെതിരെ നടക്കുന്ന ആക്രമണങ്ങളും കയ്യേറ്റങ്ങളും ഇനി നോക്കിയിരിക്കാനാവില്ലെന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു.
ഡോ. തോമസ് മാര് അത്താനാസ്യോസ് മെത്രാപ്പോലീത്തായുടെ ഔദ്യോഗിക വസതിയായ മൂവാറ്റുപുഴ അരമനയ്ക്കെതിരെ സെപ്തംബര് 19-ന് അര്ദ്ധരാത്രിയില് നടന്ന ആക്രമണത്തെപ്പറ്റി അസത്യം പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കാന് ശ്രമമുണ്ട്. തങ്ങള് നേടിയെടുത്ത ഏതോ കോടതിവിധിയുടെ പകര്പ്പ് നല്കാനാണ് അരമനയിലെത്തിയതെന്നാണ് ഇവര് പറയുന്നത്. അര്ദ്ധരാത്രിയില് സംഘം ചേര്ന്ന് ആയുധങ്ങളുമായാണോ വിധിപ്പകര്പ്പ് നല്കാനെത്തുന്നതെന്ന് കാതോലിക്കാ ബാവാ ചോദിച്ചു.
ചില വൈദികരാണ് ആക്രമണത്തിന് നേതൃത്വം നല്കിയതെന്നത് ഏറ്റവും വേദനാജനകമാണ്. എത്ര തന്നെ പ്രകോപനവും ആക്രമണവും നടത്തിയാലും സഭാതര്ക്കങ്ങളില് സുപ്രീംകോടതി പുറപ്പെടുവിച്ച വിധി നടപ്പാക്കാനുള്ള നടപടി തുടരും. ക്രമസമാധാന പ്രശ്നമുണ്ടാക്കി കോടതിവിധി അട്ടിമറിക്കാനുള്ള ശ്രമമാണ് നടക്കുന്നതെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം ആരോപിച്ചു.
1995-ലെ സുപ്രീംകോടതി വിധിയോടെ മാര് അത്താനാസിയോസ് മലങ്കര ഓര്ത്തഡോക്സ് സഭയുടെ പ്രധാന മേലദ്ധ്യക്ഷനെയും സഭാ ഭരണഘടനയേയും അംഗീകരിച്ച് പ്രവര്ത്തിച്ചു വരികയാണ്. അദ്ദേഹത്തെ അപായപ്പെടുത്തുക എന്ന ഉദ്ദേശ്യവും ആക്രമണത്തിന് പിന്നിലുണ്ടെന്ന് കാതോലിക്കാ ബാവാ ആരോപിച്ചു. മാര് അത്താനാസിയോസ് മൂവാറ്റുപുഴ അരമന വിടണമെന്ന കീഴ്ക്കോടതി വിധി ഹൈക്കോടതി സ്റ്റേ ചെയ്തിട്ടുള്ളതാണ്.
മൂവാറ്റുപുഴ അരമന സന്ദര്ശിക്കാന് തനിക്ക് യാതൊരു ഉദ്ദേശ്യവുമില്ലായിരുന്നുവെന്ന് ഒരു ചോദ്യത്തിന് കാതോലിക്കാ ബാവാ മറുപടി നല്കി. പാത്രിയര്ക്കീസിന്റെ പിന്തുണ ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ സംഭവങ്ങള്ക്ക് പിന്നിലുണ്ടോ എന്ന് ഉറപ്പില്ല.
സുപ്രീംകോടതിവിധി നടപ്പാക്കി കിട്ടുന്നതിനും ന്യൂനപക്ഷ സമുദായത്തിന്റെ ഭരണഘടനാദത്തമായ ആരാധനാ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം പരിരക്ഷിക്കുന്ന തിനും സര്ക്കാര് നടപടിയെടുക്കണമെന്നും കാതോലിക്കാ ബാവാ അഭ്യര്ത്ഥിച്ചു.

ഡോ. തോമസ് മാര് അത്താനാസ്യോസിന്റെ ഔദ്യോഗിക വസതിയായ മൂവാറ്റുപുഴ അരമനയ്ക്കു നേരെ 19-നു അര്ദ്ധരാത്രി നടന്ന സംഘടിതമായ ആക്രമണവും തുടര്ന്ന് ചില തല്പ്പരകക്ഷികള് നടത്തുന്ന നൂണപ്രചരണവും അത്യന്തം ഗൗരവമായ സ്ഥിതിവിശേഷമാണ് ഉണ്ടാക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നതെന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു. നിയമം കയ്യിലെടുത്ത് എന്തക്രമവും കാണിക്കാനുള്ള ഒരു സംഘമാളുകളുടെ ശ്രമത്തിനെതിരെ കര്ശനമായ നിയമനടപടി വേണം.
അര്ദ്ധരാത്രി വാടകഗുണ്ടകളേയും കൂട്ടി ദേവാലയങ്ങളും അരമനകളും ആക്രമിക്കുകയെന്ന നിലപാട് അത്യന്തം ഹീനവും അപലപനീയവുമാണ്. ചില വൈദികരാണ് ഈ ആക്രമണത്തിനു നേതൃത്വം നല്കിയതെന്നത് ഏറ്റവും വേദനാകരമാണ്. എത്രതന്നെ പ്രകോപനവും ആക്രമണവും നടത്തിയാലും സഭാതര്ക്കങ്ങളില് സുപ്രീംകോടതി പുറപ്പെടുവിച്ച വിധി നടപ്പാക്കാന് വേണ്ട നടപടികള് തുടരുക തന്നെ ചെയ്യും. ക്രമസമാധാന പ്രശ്നമുണ്ടാക്കി കോടതിവിധി അട്ടിമറിക്കാന് ശ്രമിക്കുന്നവര് വൃഥാവ്യായാമമാണു നടത്തുന്നത്.
സഭയിലെ ഇരുവിഭാഗങ്ങള് തമ്മിലുള്ള തര്ക്കങ്ങളില് കാതോലിക്കാ പക്ഷത്തിന് അനുകൂലമായി സുപ്രീംകോടതി അസന്ദിഗ്ധമായി വിധി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. സഭയുടെ ആരാധനാലയങ്ങളിലും വസ്തുവകകളിലും പരിപൂര്ണാധികാരം കാതോലിക്കാ ബാവായ്ക്കാണെന്നും വിധിയില് പ്രത്യേകം എടുത്തുപറയുന്നുണ്ട്. ഈ വിധി നടപ്പാക്കുന്നത് തടയാനാണു ചിലര് അക്രമമാര്ഗ്ഗം സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നത്.
സുപ്രീംകോടതിവിധി അനുസരിച്ച് 1934-ലെ ഭരണഘടന സ്വീകരിച്ച് വിധേയത്വം എഴുതിക്കൊടുക്കുന്നവര്ക്കു മാത്രമേ സ്റ്റാറ്റസ്കോ അനുവദിക്കുന്നുള്ളു. അതനുസരിച്ച് കണ്ടനാട്, അങ്കമാലി, തൃശൂര് ഭദ്രാസന മെത്രാപ്പോലീത്താമാര് സുപ്രീംകോടതി വിധി മാനിച്ച് എഴുതിത്തരുകയുണ്ടായി. മറ്റു പല മെത്രാന്മാരും ഇതിനോട് അനുഭാവം പ്രകടിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
സുപ്രീംകോടതി വിധി അംഗീകരിച്ചാണ് ഡോ. തോമസ് മാര് അത്താനാസിയോസ് ഭരണഘടനയോട് വിധേയത്വം പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ച് കണ്ടനാട് മെത്രാപ്പോലീത്താ മാത്യൂസ് മാര് സേവേറിയോസുമായി സഹകരിച്ചു പ്രവര്ത്തിച്ചു വരുന്നത്. ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഔദ്യോഗിക വസതി പിടിച്ചെടുക്കാനാണു അക്രമം നടത്തിയതെന്നു കരുതുന്നു.
മലങ്കരയിലെ ഒന്നാം കാതോലിക്കാ പരിശുദ്ധ ബസേലിയോസ് പൗലോസ് ഒന്നാമന് മാര് ഈവാനിയോസ് എന്ന പേരില് നൂറു വര്ഷം മുമ്പ് കണ്ടനാട് ഭദ്രാസന മെത്രാപ്പോലീത്തായായിരുന്ന കാലത്ത് തന്റെ ആസ്ഥാനത്തിനുവേണ്ടി വാങ്ങിയതാണ് മൂവാറ്റുപുഴ അരമന സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന സ്ഥലം.
ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്െറ കാലശേഷം കാതോലിക്കായെ സ്വീകരിച്ച ഔഗേന് മാര് തീമോത്തിയോസ് മൂവാറ്റുപുഴയില് ഒരു ഷെഡും, ചെറിയ ചാപ്പലും പിന്നീട് അരമനയും നിര്മ്മിച്ചു. 1958-ല് സഭയില് സമാധാനം പുനഃസ്ഥാപിച്ചശേഷം കണ്ടനാട് ഇടവകയുടെ സഹായ മെത്രാനായി നിയമിക്കപ്പെട്ട പൗലോസ് മാര് പീലക്സിനോസ് ആയിരുന്നു, തുടര്ന്ന് അവിടെ താമസിച്ചത്. സഭയില് വീണ്ടും ഭിന്നിപ്പുണ്ടായതിനെ തുടര്ന്ന് മാര് പീലക്സിനോസിനെ പാത്രിയര്ക്കീസ് നിയമവിധേയമല്ലാതെ ശ്രേഷ്ഠ കാതോലിക്കായായി അവരോധിച്ചു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സഹായമെത്രാനായി ഡോ. തോമസ് മാര് അത്താനാസിയോസ് അരമനയില് താമസിച്ചു. 1995-ലെ സുപ്രീംകോടതി വിധിയോടെ മാര് അത്താനാസിയോസ് മലങ്കര ഓര്ത്തഡോക്സ് സഭയുടെ പ്രധാന മേലദ്ധ്യക്ഷനേയും സഭാഭരണഘടനയേയും അംഗീകരിച്ചു പ്രവര്ത്തിച്ചുവരികയാണ്. ഇദ്ദേഹത്തെ അപായപ്പെടുത്തുക എന്ന ഉദ്ദേശ്യവും ആക്രമണത്തിനു പിന്നിലുണ്ട്.
സഭയുടെ ആരാധനാലയങ്ങളില് ഈയിടെ ചില തല്പ്പരകക്ഷികള് നടത്തിയ ആക്രമണങ്ങളുടെ തുടര്ച്ചയാണിത്. കടമറ്റം, കോലഞ്ചേരി, കട്ടച്ചിറ, അല്ലപ്ര എന്നിവിടങ്ങളില് ആക്രമണങ്ങള് നടത്തി പള്ളികള് പൂട്ടിച്ചു. കടമറ്റത്തെ വൈദികനെ കുര്ബാനയ്ക്കു ശേഷം മണിക്കൂറുകളോളം പള്ളിക്കുള്ളില് പൂട്ടിയിട്ട നീചവും പൈശാചികവുമായ സംഭവത്തിനു പിന്നിലും ഈ അക്രമികളാണ്. മറ്റു സ്ഥലങ്ങളില് നിന്നു വാടകഗുണ്ടകളെ കൊണ്ടുവന്നു ക്രമസമാധാനം തകര്ന്നെന്നു വരുത്തുന്നത് അത്യന്തം പ്രതിഷേധാര്ഹമാണ്. ഒരേ സഭയില്പ്പെട്ട വിശ്വാസികളെ ചേരിതിരിച്ചു കലഹിക്കാന് പ്രേരിപ്പിക്കുന്നതു ഹീനമായ നടപടിയാണ്.
അക്രമങ്ങളില് പ്രകോപിതരാകാതെയിരിക്കാനും നീതിയും ന്യായവും നടപ്പാക്കിക്കിട്ടുന്നതിനായി പ്രവര്ത്തിക്കാനും സഭാവിശ്വാസികളെ ബാവാ ആഹ്വാനം ചെയ്തു. സഭയില് ഇപ്പോഴുണ്ടായിരിക്കുന്ന പ്രശ്നങ്ങള് നിയമ പരമായി പരിഹരിക്കുന്നതിനും, സുപ്രീംകോടതി വിധി നടപ്പാക്കിക്കിട്ടുന്ന തിനും സര്ക്കാര് നടപടികള് സ്വീകരിക്കണമെന്ന് ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു. ന്യൂനപക്ഷ സമുദായത്തിന്റെ ഭരണഘടനാദത്തമായ ആരാധനാസ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം പരിരക്ഷിക്കുന്നതിനു സര്ക്കാര് നടപടി ഉണ്ടാകുമെന്നു പ്രത്യാശിക്കുന്നതായി അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു.
