Very Rev. Fr. Philip Thomas Cor-Episcopa – Pride of the Malankara Orthodox Church in South East Asia
Very Rev. Fr. Philip Thomas Cor-Episcopa is the first among Malaysian citizens to enter the order of glorious Orthodox Priesthood from Malayasia, in the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. It is indeed a privilege to greet our beloved Philip Thomas Cor-Episcopa, as he celebrates his sixtieth birthday today.
Respected Philip Thomas Achen was born on 4th July 1955. He joined the Orthodox Theological Seminary at Kottayam in 1977 and completed his B.D. in 1982. During his study at the Seminary he had the opportunity to serve as the Secretary of H.G. Dr. Paulose Mar Gregorios of blessed memory. Philip Achen was ordained as priest by H.G. Thomas Mar Thimothios (H.H. Baselios Marthoma Didimos I) on 6th May 1984. His ordination was the first ordination service of Malankara Orthodox Church witnessed by the parish in Malaysian soil. Respected Philip Achen was consecrated as Cor-Episcopos by the Church on1st Dec, 1996.
Respected Philip Thomas Achen is a known good orator, spiritual shepherd, retreat leader and administrator. He has already very dedicatedly catered to the spiritual needs of ‘three generations of faithful’, living outside India and has been an immensely fruitful instrument in the hands of God, in nurturing them in the faith of the Holy Orthodox Church. He has served as the Vicar of St. Mary’s Orthodox Cathedral, Malaysia for about thirty years. He is also serving as the Chairman of the Student Christian Movement (SCM) in Malaysia, Vice-President of the National Council of Churches of Malaysia, Director of the Community Center for Inter-Faith and Peace initiative, Co-Chairman of Friendship group for Inter-religious services (FGIS) and Director of the Y.M.C.A Kuala Lumpur. He is also member of the Urban Rural Mission Commission of the C.C.A. He was the chief speaker at the International Sufi Conference conducted at Lahore.
I have described only a part of the ingenious personality of respected Philip Thomas Achen. The Malaysian community remain greatly indebted to him for his service to the St. Mary’s Cathedral, Kuala Lumpur and his yeomen and inspiring example and ministry to the upcoming generation of the holy Church. May God be abundantly with him and grant him many more years of fruitful and effective service as God’s chosen instrument of Malankara Orthodox Church.
An unmarried Priest with lot of Indian and International quality exposure and Orthodox spiritual depth and faith calibre, this noble soul should be used by the Church for higher levels of service in that region of the world.
