Now help has come from Dr. David Gaunt, Professor emeritus of History, Centre for Baltic and East European Studies, S\u00f6dert\u00f6rn University. He has forwarded this explanation provided by his student Hanna Beth-Sawoce. The image is that of Bishop Iwannis Elias Halluleh of Jerusalem (April 27, 1900, Library of Congress Photo).<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<h4 id=\"m_8045664607159691227yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506142721813_11829\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span id=\"m_8045664607159691227yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506142721813_11830\" style=\"font-family: Calibri, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span id=\"m_8045664607159691227yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506142721813_11831\">Halluleh was bishop of Jerusalem from 1896-1906 and oversaw the building of the &#8216;Patriarchate&#8217; reception room (Ba\u0163rikxana-\u0628\u0637\u0631\u0643\u062e\u0627\u0646\u0647).<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 id=\"m_8045664607159691227yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506142721813_11832\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span id=\"m_8045664607159691227yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506142721813_11833\" style=\"font-family: Calibri, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span id=\"m_8045664607159691227yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506142721813_11834\">His birth name was Man\u015fur. He was born in Mardin in 1855 and became a monk in 1875. He was consecrated bishop by Patriarch Peter III [IV] in 1886 and headed Dayro d Za&#8217;faran, the seat of the Patriarchate at the time.<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 id=\"m_8045664607159691227yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506142721813_11835\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span id=\"m_8045664607159691227yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506142721813_11836\" style=\"font-family: Calibri, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span id=\"m_8045664607159691227yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506142721813_11837\">He then became bishop of Syria in 1895 (at the time what is now Syria and Lebanon were one diocese with its center in Nabak, the H\u0331oms area).<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 id=\"m_8045664607159691227yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506142721813_11838\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span id=\"m_8045664607159691227yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506142721813_11839\" style=\"font-family: Calibri, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span id=\"m_8045664607159691227yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506142721813_11840\">Then he became a bishop of Jerusalem in 1896 until 1906.<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 id=\"m_8045664607159691227yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506142721813_11841\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span id=\"m_8045664607159691227yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506142721813_11842\" style=\"font-family: Calibri, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span id=\"m_8045664607159691227yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1506142721813_11843\">Between 1923 and 1928, he was Patriarchal Vicar in Cairo after which he retired at St. Mark&#8217;s monastery in Jerusalem where he passed away on May 15, 1933.<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometime back, The Washington Post published an image gallery on the theme &#8220;Once Upon a Time in Syria&#8221;, featuring pictures from that country dated early 20th century.
