I am happy to note that my post \u2018Ancient Christian Monuments in Kerala : Some Points of Concern\u2019 has evoked considerable interest among the think\u2013tank of our church. After the article appeared in SGOS and ICON networks, I received several phone calls and e-mails from far and near. My article was as much about our Catholic brethren monopolizing all Christian spaces while older, indigenous churches like ours sit silent displaying sheer indifference as about our negligence in preserving our heritage sites and buildings. Most of the responses I got ignored the first point and focussed mainly on the second.<\/span><\/div>\n
Many have pointed out that I wrote only about the restoration attempts of the churches in Kottayam zone and did not do justice to the remarkable efforts of preservation carried out at Paliyakkara, Karthikappally, Kallooppara and Niranam Churches. I do admit that the efforts in these places are also commendable. My attempt was not to \u2018localize\u2019 the issue. As my article quoted the comment of Mr. Robinet Jacob, Head of Tourism Studies at M. G. University that Kottayam district alone has more than 15 churches more than 500 years old and these should be preserved as heritage sites, I focussed on the Kottayam churches. That is all. And I mentioned the Kunnamkulam churches because they are not very far from the Kodungalloor \u2013 Muziris belt where St. Thomas first landed.<\/span><\/div>\n
The graver omission perhaps was that of the Koonan Kurisu Suriyani Pally<\/b> which is being consecrated tomorrow (25th<\/sup> February 2017). Mr. John Samuel, Global Vice\u2013President of the World Malayalee Council and Convener of the church re-construction project wrote to me regarding this glaring omission. I was all the more impressed with the efforts taken to preserve this heritage site after I saw the picture and news item in \u2018Malayala Manorama\u2019 daily of 22nd<\/sup> February. The architect Vinu Daniel deserves special mention for having retained the walls, floors and altar of the church constructed here in 1751. My appreciation increased two\u2013fold when I read that the built up area of the church is the same as that of the old shrine (400 sq.ft.) even though we now have a 58 cent plot of land there. The pyramidal structure, the preserved old thronos containing the relics of St. George, the sand\u2013based construction rejecting the concrete option \u2013\u2013 all seem commendable. My only regret now is that I cannot pay a visit to the church tomorrow at the time of the consecration as I am away in Chennai on an urgent mission. Congrats to Mr. John Samuel and his team once again !<\/span><\/div>\n
Two weeks ago, noted church historian Dr. M. Kurian Thomas telephoned me and requested a favour. He wanted me to translate the Mattachnerry Padiyola<\/b> of 3rd<\/sup> Makaram 1653 to English so that it could be displayed somewhere within the Koonan Kurisu Pally. This is the historic document whereby our forefathers threw away the Roman Episcopal overlordship and resolved to elevate Archdeacon Thomas as our religious head. As the language of the document is antique Malayalam (more than 3\u20134 centuries old), I consulted 3 language scholars on various points. (Fr. Dr. Johns Abraham Konatt, Dr. C. J. Roy, Formerly Professor of Malayalam, Madurai Kamaraj University, Dr. Shyla Abraham, HOD, Dept. of Malayalam, Baselius College). I spent almost half a day on translating the same. I don\u2019t know whether this historic padiyola has been redone on some marble or brass plaque and exhibited inside the church for generations of Malankara Nazranis to watch and derive pride from. Anyhow I am just giving below the original pledge in Malayalam and my English translation with the hope that someday these will stand out as testimonies of the Malanakara Nazranis\u2019 bold resistance against the colonial masters.<\/span><\/div>\n

MATTANCHERRY RESOLUTION \u2013 3 MAKARAM 1653<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n

\u201cThis is the resolution regarding the agreement reached by the Archdeacon, Vicars of the parishes under the Malankara Church, Priests of the locality and everybody present at Mattancherry Church on Friday, 3rd<\/sup> Makaram of the year 1653 after the birth of our Lord Jesus.<\/span><\/div>\n
As the (Jesuit) bishop and priests of Sampaloor have forcefully captured the Patriarch whom the Holy Universal Church sent to us in Malankara and decreed that we shall not benefit by him, we hereby affirm that as long as that Patriarch who came to Malankara is there in front of our eyes (sic), Mar Francis who currently rules over Malankara is not our Metropolitan. We also truly swear that we are not subjects under his See. Since a bishop is needed as per the custom of the Holy Church to rule over our Diocese, it is also truly sworn that now onwards Archdeacon Thomas shall rule as such. We also truly swear that Fr. Itty Thommen of Kallissery Parish, Fr. Kadavil Chandy of Kaduthuruthy parish, Fr. Vengoor Geevarghese of Angamaly parish and Fr. Palliveettil Chandy of Kuravilangadu parish \u2013\u2013 these four shall be councillors for the same and every three years, they shall be changed in accordance with the decision of the relevant (Palliyogam) meetings and such changes shall be notified from time to time.<\/span><\/div>\n
